The first Van Brienenoordbrug was opened on 1 February 1965, although plans for a bridge east of Rotterdam had existed since the nineteen thirties. The highway A16 soon became the countriest busiest, and a copy of the bow, spanning 287,5 meters, was built in Zwijndrecht and placed next to the old one in 1989. 15 centimeter to the West. 24 meters separate the bridge from the river Maas. Still, the bridge needs to be opened for large ships circa 500 times a year. This takes 18 minutes each time.
