The first Van Brienenoordbrug was opened on 1 February 1965, although plans for a bridge east of Rotterdam had existed since the nineteen thirties. The highway A16 soon became the countriest busiest, and a copy of the bow, spanning 287,5 meters, was built in Zwijndrecht and placed next to the old one in 1989. 15 centimeter to the West. The new bridge is a little wider the the original.
24 meters separate the bridge from the river Maas. Still, the bridge needs to be opened for large ships circa 500 times a year. This takes 18 minutes each time.
