The architectural complex of the Church of St. Elias in Furore consists of two separate rooms, and a small bell tower, built on many levels, on square plan, and strangely without a dome or a cusp as a terminal. The small nave, at the entrance of the Church, presents also a square plan, covered with a cross vault supported on the central crutch, by two columns with capitals. This was the original nucleus of the religious structure. At a later time, probably in the XV century, to the original church, was added the actual unique nave, with one chapel on each side and the presbytery covered by a cap. In the new nave, behind the altar is possible to admire a triptych made up of 3 tables with the figures of the Madonna and Child in the centre, and the Saints Bartholomew and Elijah on the two sides. The work was done by Master Angelo Antonelli from Capua in 1479, and is the only work of the Master on the Amalfi Coast. The picture has great historical importance to understand the painting movements developing in Naples, under the Aragonese Kingdom, and the consequences changes flourishing with the Neapolitan artists in the period between 1458 and 1503. The development of the artistic movement of this period is enlarged with new reports that involved artists from Ferrara and Valencia. The study of the details of the triptych of Sant’Elia, some of which absolutely new to the Neapolitan School, combined with the historic elements of the time, have brought forward a very interesting scenario of Naples and the events that took place there during the Aragonese Kingdom. Adjacent to the Church of St. Elias there was a vicarage, which was presumably used by the Archbishop of Amalfi as a summer retreat. In this house of the Bishop, was found a painting of the Crucifixion, signed with initials and numbers. The painting was removed and restored, and then placed on one of the walls of the Café dell'Affresco in the Furore Inn Resort e Spa.
