Motuokura - creyfish island, was a place of refuge for the local people when tribal war occured on the land. Ledgend has it that a great swimmer Kura, would lead her people to the safety of the island in times of turmoil. An underocean freshwater spring gave the people access to fresh water, thus enabling them more time to stay on the island if needed. On shore would be the invading tribe waiting for the people to run out of water and come back into land, however Kura the springwater gatherer would ensure a plentiful supply of fresh water from their underwater spring Nga Puhake o te Ora, the Bubble of Life.
